The Elders normally take a break from writing an Elder's Corner article during the summer months. However, it is truly an exciting time in the life of Pilgrim Lutheran Church as we await the arrival of Pastor Heidi, Robert, and Ainsley. In addition, it is a special month for one of our newest members, Jason Fugate, who is headed to Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago this fall. He has been called to ministry at a crucial time in our church when many of our rostered leaders are reaching retirement age and our seminaries are receiving fewer candidates.
The ELCA website mentions that our seminaries have been preparing leaders "to share the good news of Jesus Christ and to inspire and equip members to participate in God's work in the world" for a very long time. These leaders are called to be teachers in "word and action, inviting and equipping people to participate in listening to God, each other, and to the world so that together we can love and serve our neighbor with a living, daring confidence in God's grace."
I would like to take this opportunity to to introduce Jason so that each of us will know him a little better. Jason is the son of Pastor Dan Fugate and his wife Karen, and brother to Brent. He graduated from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, in May 2018, were he majored in Financial Economics with a minor in Mathematics. While at Capital University, he served as the Student Body President his senior year, completed an internship in the Office of Student and Community Engagement, served as an orientation leader, and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. Jason has remained active in the church, participating in nine mission trips. He also volunteered at First English Lutheran Church in Columbus, Ohio, where he assisted with their children's programming. He most recently led the Indiana-Kentucky Synod's Youth Leadership summit earlier this summer. He is excited to begin seminary this fall where he will be an ELCA Fund for Leaders Scholar.
It is with much joy that Pilgrim is the sponsoring congregation for Jason as he embarks upon this journey. Please join us on August 26 as we celebrate this event during the 10:45 a.m. worship service. A reception with cake and punch will follow the service.
